A coordinate system is like a big map where everything has a special "address" called coordinates. Just like your house has an address with numbers and letters that tell people how to find it, a point on a coordinate system has coordinates that tell people where to find it.
The coordinate system has two lines that cross each other called the x-axis and y-axis. The x-axis goes left to right and the y-axis goes up and down. Together they make a big cross in the middle of the map.
To find a point on the map, you need two things: an x-coordinate and a y-coordinate. The x-coordinate tells you how far to go left or right from the middle of the map (also called the origin) and the y-coordinate tells you how far to go up or down from the middle.
So if someone tells you that a point is at (3, 4), that means you start at the middle of the map and then move three spaces to the right on the x-axis and four spaces up on the y-axis to find where the point is.
So just like a house address can help people find your house, coordinates can help people find points on a coordinate system.
