ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Copyfraud

Okay kiddo, sometimes people want to make money by selling stuff that they didn't really make or own. This is called copyfraud. They might say that they own something, like a picture or a song, even though they don't really have the right to use it. It's kind of like if you said you drew a really cool picture but you actually just copied it from a book.

Copyfraud is bad because it can trick people into paying for something that they shouldn't have to pay for. It's like if you wanted to buy a toy but someone told you that you had to pay extra for the box it came in, even though the box wasn't really part of the toy.

Sometimes people try to stop copyfraud by saying that the things they own are copyrighted. That means that other people aren't allowed to use or sell those things without permission. But sometimes people lie and say things are copyrighted when they're actually not. That's called false copyright.

So remember, it's not okay to copy things that other people made and pretend like they're yours. And it's not okay to say that something is copyrighted if it's not really copyrighted. That's copyfraud, and it's not fair to everyone involved.
