Corbel

Have you ever seen a shelf? It's a flat board that sticks out from the wall and you can put things on it. Well, a corbel is kind of like a shelf. Except, it's not just a flat board, it's a little bit fancier. A corbel is a piece of stone, wood, or even metal that juts out from a wall and it's usually shaped a little bit like a triangle.

The cool thing about corbels is that they were used a long time ago in really important buildings, like castles and churches. People would use corbels to hold up heavy things like statues, big stones, or even the roof of a building. A corbel is really strong because it sticks out from the wall and it has a lot of support underneath it.

So, next time you see a fancy building, look closely and see if you can spot any corbels holding up heavy things!
