ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Corpsing

When actors are pretending to be someone else on stage or in TV or movies, they have to remember their lines, their movements, and expressions. They have to be really good at pretending! But sometimes, they mess up or something unexpected happens, and they start laughing or doing something that doesn't fit the story. That's called "corpsing."

It's like when you're playing a game of pretend with your friends and somebody accidentally says something funny or silly, and you all start laughing. The same thing happens with actors. They might forget their lines, hear a funny noise, or see something unexpected, and they can't help but laugh.

Corpsing is actually a problem because it breaks the illusion of the story. If an actor laughs during a serious scene, then the audience will no longer believe that the story is true. So actors have to try really hard not to corps, and directors might have to reshoot a scene if an actor corpses too much.

But sometimes, corpsing can make the story even funnier or more endearing. So it's a bit of a double-edged sword!
