ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Crystallographic point group

OK, let's pretend you are building with some toys like legos or blocks. Sometimes when you stack these toys together, they form a pattern or a shape that looks the same if you turn it around or flip it. This is called symmetry.

Now, imagine doing this with atoms instead of toys. Scientists call this a crystal. Crystals have different shapes and patterns that look the same from different directions. We call these patterns "point groups".

So, just like when you stack toys together, when scientists put atoms together in a crystal, they can create different point groups depending on the pattern. Each point group has its own special properties and tells us how to move the crystal so that it looks the same from different angles. This helps us understand how crystals work and how we can use them in different areas like medicine, electronics or even cooking!
