ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cultural backwardness

Okay kiddo, so you know how people come from different places and have different customs and ways of doing things, right? Well, sometimes when we say "cultural backwardness" we're talking about places where people still do things in a really old-fashioned way, like they haven't caught up with the rest of the world yet.

Now, that might sound kinda mean, but it's really just a way of saying that some societies have been slower to change than others. For example, maybe in one country they still use a lot of manual labor and don't have a lot of technology or fancy machines to do things quickly and easily. Or maybe they have very strict rules about who can marry whom or what women can wear or do.

It's important to remember that just because a society is different from how we do things where we live doesn't mean it's bad or wrong. But sometimes when we talk about cultural backwardness we're saying that we think they could benefit from change and modernization to improve their overall quality of life.
