ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Curvilinear coordinates

Curvilinear coordinates are a way of representing points (locations in space) using curved lines. Instead of using straight lines like in a graph, curvilinear coordinates use curved lines that are bent in different directions. This makes it easier to make measurements and calculations that involve curved surfaces or shapes. Imagine playing a game on a huge curved board – with curvilinear coordinates, you would be able to tell exactly where you are on the board.
