Data is information that computers use to help them do their jobs. Data can be numbers, images, words, sounds, or even videos. Computers store all this data in very small units called bits. Bits are like little containers that hold the information that computers need to do their jobs. When a computer is given some data, it looks at all the bits and uses them to come up with a result. For example, if you give a computer a picture of a dog, it will look at all the bits of the picture, like the color of the fur and the shape of the ears, and then tell you what kind of dog it is. Computers always have to have data to do their jobs. That's why data is such an important part of computing!
