ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Data remanence

Data remanence is like when you draw a picture on a piece of paper, but even if you throw the paper away, some parts of the drawing could still be seen on the paper. In the same way, when we save information on a computer or device, even if we delete it or get rid of the device, there might still be traces of that information left over.

This is because when we save something on a device, it is stored in a specific way on the hardware or memory. Even if we delete it, sometimes parts of the information might still be left behind. This can be a problem if the information is sensitive or personal, because someone else might be able to access it even though we thought we deleted it.

So, it's important to properly erase any information we don't want anyone else to see by using special software or hardware to completely wipe the memory clean. This ensures that there is no trace of the information left over, just like erasing a picture completely from a piece of paper.
