Deacons for Defense and Justice

Deacons for Defense and Justice were a group of African American men from Louisiana and Mississippi who formed to protect African Americans from the Ku Klux Klan and other people who wanted to keep African Americans from having civil rights like voting. They carried guns and patrolled African American neighborhoods to make sure no one was treated unfairly. They also used peaceful methods to help African Americans get the rights they deserved.
