Declared monuments of Hong Kong

Okay kiddo, let me explain what declared monuments of Hong Kong are. So, you know when we see old buildings that are very important and have been around for a really long time, like castles or maybe temples, and people go to visit them to learn about history? Well, in Hong Kong, the government has identified some really special places and buildings that are very important to the city’s history and culture. These places are called “declared monuments”.

They are given this special status so that they can be protected and preserved for future generations to appreciate and learn from. It’s just like taking care of your favorite toy, so nobody can damage it or throw it away.

The Hong Kong government can declare any building or structure that is more than 60 years old as a monument if it is deemed to have particular historic, architectural, or cultural value. It’s like when your parents or teachers mark something important so that they don't forget it, in this case, it means the building is very important for the whole city to remember and appreciate.

So when a building becomes a declared monument, it means that it cannot be destroyed or changed without the government’s permission. So, whether it’s a temple, a school or a building, we can visit and admire these places and be proud of our history and culture!
