ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Deep-sky object

Okay kiddo, so you know how sometimes at night the sky is really dark and you can see lots of tiny little lights up there? Well, sometimes there are bigger things up there that you can see too! We call those bigger things deep-sky objects.

These deep-sky objects are things like galaxies, star clusters, and nebulas. Galaxies are like big groups of stars, kind of like a city of stars. Star clusters are like little groups of stars all hanging out together, like a small party of stars. And nebulas are like big clouds of gas and dust, kind of like a foggy day up in the sky.

Now, the reason we call them deep-sky objects is because they're really far away, like super duper far away. In fact, some of them are so far away that it takes their light millions or even billions of years to reach us here on Earth!

But even though they're far away, we can still see them because they're really bright and they stand out against the dark night sky. So next time you're outside on a really clear night, look up at the sky and see if you can spot any of these deep-sky objects!
