ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Default effect

Have you ever played a game where you had to choose between a bunch of different options? Like choosing your favorite flavor of ice cream or your favorite color of shoes? Well, sometimes when we have to make choices like that, we tend to pick the option that is already chosen for us, or the "default" option.

For example, when you're in a restaurant and the waiter asks you what drink you want, they might say "Would you like Pepsi or Coke?" If you don't have a preference, you might just say "Coke" because it's the default option that was offered to you.

That's called the "default effect." It's when we tend to choose the option that is already given to us, instead of taking the time to think about all the different choices and pick the one that we really want.

Sometimes this can be a good thing, like when we're in a rush and just want to quickly make a decision. But other times, it can be bad because we might not end up getting what we really want. So it's important to take a little bit of time to think about our choices before we make a decision, and not just pick the default option.
