Defensive democracy

Okay so, imagine you and your friends all want to play a game together. But sometimes, some friends might cheat or try to change the rules in their favor so they always win. That wouldn't be fair, right?

Well, that's kind of what can happen in a country when people who have a lot of power - like the government or big companies - try to cheat and change the rules so they always get what they want.

To make sure that doesn't happen, a lot of countries have something called a "defensive democracy." This is like a set of rules that protect the people from those who might abuse their power.

For example, in a defensive democracy, everyone gets to vote for their leaders. That way, the people who are in charge are the ones that most people wanted, not just the ones with the most money or power.

Defensive democracy also means that there are rules that leaders have to follow. If they break the rules, there are consequences - like getting kicked out of their job.

So, to sum it up: a defensive democracy is like playing a fair game where everyone has a chance to win, and there are rules to make sure nobody cheats. It's a way of making sure that the people in charge can't just do whatever they want, and that everyone's rights are protected.
