ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Department of Fair Employment and Housing

The Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) is a group of grown-ups that watch over how people are treated at work and when they are looking for a job or a place to live. Just like how you have rules to follow at school and with your friends, there are rules that grown-ups must follow when they are hiring someone or renting out a place to live.

Let's say that you want to be a firefighter when you grow up. When you are older, you will need to apply for a job and have an interview. The people who hire firefighters cannot say mean things to you or not hire you because of the color of your skin or because you are a boy or a girl. This is against the rules and the DFEH will make sure that everything is fair for everyone who wants to be a firefighter.

The DFEH also helps people who rent a home or apartment. When someone wants to rent a place to live, they cannot say mean things or not rent to someone because of their race or their religion. This is not fair and the DFEH will make sure that everyone has a chance to rent a place they like.

So, the DFEH is like a superhero team that makes sure everyone is treated fairly at work and when they are looking for a place to live. They make sure that people follow the rules so that everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed.
