Child neglect is when a parent or caregiver doesn't take proper care of a child, either by not giving the child enough attention, not making sure they have enough food or shelter, or not making sure they get proper medical care or education. If a child is neglected in early childhood, it can have a big impact on their development. It can mean that the child has problems at school, because they may not have had enough learning opportunities, or because of the stress of neglect in their life. They may also have physical, mental and emotional health problems, because their physical and mental development may not have been supported properly. Neglect can also mean that a child has difficulty forming strong relationships, because they have not felt secure in the care of their parents or caregivers.
