ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Deviate (statistics)

In statistics, to deviate from something means to go away from it. In everyday language, it means to go a different way than what people normally do. In statistics, when something deviates from the normal, it means that the number or data is different from the average or what is expected. For example, if a class' average exam score is 50, but one student scores 100, then that student has deviated from the average by a large amount.
