Diameter at breast height

Diameter at breast height, or DBH for short, is a way to measure how thick a tree is around its trunk. Imagine you are giving your favorite tree a big hug and you measure how far your arms can go around it. That would be kind of like measuring the DBH of the tree.

But instead of using your arms, people use a measuring tape or a special tool called a caliper. They wrap it around the trunk of the tree at a certain height, which is usually 4.5 feet (or about 1.4 meters) off the ground.

Why 4.5 feet? Well, that's about the height where most people can comfortably reach and measure a tree. Plus, it's a standard height used by scientists and foresters so they can compare measurements from different trees.

So, when people talk about the DBH of a tree, they are talking about how wide it is at 4.5 feet off the ground. This measurement is important because it can tell us how old the tree is, how much wood it contains, and how much carbon it can store. Plus, it helps us manage forests more effectively by knowing which trees are the biggest and most valuable.
