ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Diaolou

Diaolou are very tall and strong buildings that were built in a place called the Kaiping region of China a long time ago. These buildings were made of stone, brick, and concrete, and they were designed to be really tough so that they could protect the people who lived inside them.

Why did people need to live in a building that was so strong? Well, the Kaiping region used to be a very dangerous place where bandits and robbers would often attack villages and steal things from people. So, the people who lived there needed a safe place to live where they could protect themselves and their belongings from any danger.

But these buildings were not just strong and safe, they were also very beautiful! They were decorated with all sorts of colorful tiles, stones, and carvings. Some of them even had paintings and calligraphy on the walls. They were like big and fancy castles that people could live in!

Today, diaolou are still standing in the Kaiping region, and many people still live in them. They have become a very important part of Chinese culture and history, and they are now protected as UNESCO World Heritage sites. They remind us of a time long ago when people had to be strong and brave to protect themselves and their families.
