ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Diffuse nebula

So, have you ever looked up into the night sky and seen all those little dots of light? Those are called stars, and they're really far away from us. Some of those stars are born in big, fluffy clouds of gas and dust called diffuse nebulae.

Now, when we say "diffuse," it just means that the gas and dust are spread out, like a big cloud. And "nebula" is just a fancy name for a cloud of gas and dust. So, a diffuse nebula is basically a big, fluffy cloud of gas and dust in space.

These clouds are made up of lots of different gases, like hydrogen, helium, and oxygen. They can also have tiny dust particles floating around in them. These gases and particles are too spread out for us to see with our eyes, but scientists use special instruments to study them.

Sometimes, these clouds can be really big! Bigger than our whole Solar System. And even though they're called "nebulae," they're not just one thing. They can be made up of lots of smaller clouds all clumped together.

One really famous diffuse nebula is the Orion Nebula, which you might be able to see if you go stargazing on a clear night. It's in the Orion constellation, and it's one of the brightest and closest nebulae to Earth. It's also a place where new stars are born!

So, in summary, diffuse nebulae are just big, fluffy clouds of gas and dust in space. They can be made up of lots of different gases and dust particles, and they're where new stars are born!
