Directional derivative

A directional derivative is a measure of how quickly something is changing in one particular direction. Think of it like driving on a straight road - the directional derivative would let you know if the road is getting more steep or if it is getting more flat. It would also tell you if the road was turning to the left or the right. A directional derivative is one way to measure how something is changing with respect to a certain direction.
