ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Disjunct (linguistics)

Okay kiddo, a disjunct is a special word or phrase that we use to show how the speaker feels about what they are saying or about the situation they are talking about. It's like adding a little extra information about how we think or feel.

For example, when someone says "Interestingly, the moon is actually moving away from the earth," the word "interestingly" is a disjunct because it shows that the speaker thinks it's an interesting fact.

Disjuncts can also show how we feel or think about something more generally. For example, if we say "Sadly, I have to go to bed early tonight," the word "sadly" shows that we feel disappointed about it.

Overall, disjuncts are a way of adding an extra layer of meaning to what we say, so that people can understand not just what we are saying, but how we feel about it too.
