Okay, so you know how grown-ups like to drink drinks like beer or wine or cocktails, right? Well, one of the kinds of drinks they drink is called a distilled beverage.
To make a distilled beverage, grown-ups start with something called a "mash." This is like a soup made from different grains like corn or barley or rye. They put the mash into a big pot and heat it up until it starts to boil.
When the mash is boiling, it lets out steam. The grown-ups catch that steam and make it go through something called a "still." A still is like a fancy machine that separates liquids -- kind of like how your toy cars can drive on different roads, but they can't cross each other.
The still separates the steam from the mash, and turns it back into a liquid. This new liquid is called the "distillate" -- it's the really strong part of the drink, and it has a lot of alcohol in it.
But the distillate is too strong to drink by itself, so grown-ups usually mix it with other things to make it taste better. Sometimes they mix it with fruit juices or sugar or other flavors. And then they put it in a bottle so they can drink it later!
Some popular distilled beverages are whiskey, vodka, gin, and brandy. They all start with a mash, and then they're distilled, mixed, and bottled to make a fun drink for grown-ups!
