ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Division of Korea

Okay kiddo, let me explain to you what happened to Korea a long time ago. Korea used to be one big country but it was separated into two parts, the North and the South. This happened because different groups of people in Korea had different ideas about how to run the country.

In 1945, at the end of World War II, the Japanese who had occupied Korea for many years, surrendered. The Soviet Union (now called Russia) and the United States agreed to divide Korea into a northern part and a southern part. The North was to be under the influence of the Soviet Union and the South was to be under the influence of the United States.

Soon after, in 1948, two separate countries were formed: North Korea and South Korea. The North became a communist state and the South became a democracy.

The division of Korea was not an easy process and there were many challenges along the way. For many years, the two countries have been separated by a heavily guarded border called the 'demilitarized zone' or DMZ. This is meant to prevent conflict between the two sides.

While North Korea has remained a communist country and has faced many challenges, South Korea has developed into a prosperous and democratic nation. Despite the division, the people of both North and South Korea share a common language and culture, and many Koreans hope that someday the two countries will be reunited. That's the story of how Korea got divided.
