Once upon a time, there was a very big and strong Mongol empire ruled by a powerful emperor named Genghis Khan. He conquered many lands and made the empire very big. But when Genghis Khan died, his sons and grandsons started to fight over who should be the boss of the whole empire.
They couldn't agree, so they decided to split the empire into four smaller parts. Each part would be ruled by one of Genghis Khan's grandsons. These four parts were called khanates.
The first khanate was ruled by Batu Khan and was called the Golden Horde. It was located in what is now Russia and was named after the golden-colored tents that the people lived in.
The second khanate was ruled by Chagatai Khan and was called the Chagatai Khanate. It was located in Central Asia and was named after Chagatai, who was also one of Genghis Khan's sons.
The third khanate was ruled by Hulagu Khan and was called the Ilkhanate. It was located in what is now Iran and Iraq and was named after Hulagu, who was also one of Genghis Khan's sons.
The fourth khanate was ruled by Kublai Khan and was called the Yuan Dynasty. It was located in what is now China and was named after the Yuan dynasty, which was the name of the empire Kublai built.
So, the Mongol empire was divided into four smaller empires, and each one had its own ruler. Even though they were separate, they were still related and had the same ancestors.
