ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Double dative

Okay kiddo, let me explain the double dative to you. Imagine you have two friends. One friend gives you something, like a toy truck, and the other friend wants you to give them something, like a snack.

In English, you might say "My friend gave me a toy truck" and "My other friend asked me for a snack."

But in some languages, like German and Dutch, they use something called a "double dative" to make these sentences.

So instead of saying "My friend gave me a toy truck," they would say "My friend gave a toy truck to me."

And instead of saying "My other friend asked me for a snack," they would say "My other friend asked for a snack from me."

It's like they add an extra word to show who is giving and who is receiving.

It might sound a little weird to us, but it's just a different way of talking. So there you have it, the double dative explained like you're 5!
