Douglas Treaties

Okay kiddo, so a long time ago, when Canada was just starting to become a country, the people in charge wanted to make friends with the First Nations people who had been living here for a really long time.

So, they made some special agreements with them called the Douglas Treaties. These were named after a man named James Douglas who was helping Canada at the time.

The treaties basically said that Canada could use the land that the First Nations people were living on, but they had to be respectful of their traditions and ways of life. Canada also promised to give the First Nations people some money, horses, blankets and food as a way of saying thank you for sharing their land.

Some of the treaties were signed a long time ago, in the 1800s, and some were signed more recently. They are still important today because they help Canada keep its promises to the First Nations people and help us all live together in a fair and respectful way.
