ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Drill

Imagine you have a block of wood and you want to make a hole in it so you can put a screw in. A drill is a special tool that can help you make that hole. It has a handle on one end and a pointy part on the other end, called the drill bit.

The drill bit is like a sharp stick that spins very fast when you push the button on the handle. When it spins, it starts to whittle away at the wood and makes a hole. It's kind of like when you use a pencil to draw on a piece of paper, but instead of making a mark on the paper, the drill bit removes parts of the wood to make a hole.

There are different kinds of drill bits for making different types of holes. Some are really small, like for making tiny holes for jewelry, and some are really big, like for making holes in walls to hang shelves.

Drills can be powered by electricity, like when you plug them into the wall, or by batteries, like when you use a cordless drill. Some drills are so powerful they can even make holes in metal!

But it's very important to be safe when using a drill. You should always wear eye protection and make sure to only use it on the things that the drill bit is meant for. And always ask a grown-up for help if you're not sure what to do.
