ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Driver's education

When you grow up and want to drive a car, you need to learn how to drive and be safe on the road. Driver's education is a class that helps you do that.

First, you have to be old enough to take this class, usually around 15 or 16 years old. The class teaches you about the rules of the road, such as stop signs, traffic lights, and speed limits. It also teaches you about driving laws and how to be a safe driver.

The class is split into two parts: the classroom and the driving portion. In the classroom, you sit and listen to a teacher talk about driving rules and laws. You will learn how to read and interpret road signs, signals, and markings on the road. They will also teach you how to drive defensively, meaning you anticipate and avoid dangerous situations on the road.

The driving portion involves actually going out and driving a car with an instructor. This is where you learn how to operate the car, including how to turn, change lanes, and parallel park. You’ll also learn how to make good decisions on the road, like how to handle bad weather or how to react when an animal runs onto the road.

Once you pass the class and the driving portion, you will get a driver's license. That means you can now legally drive on the road, but it's important to remember that driving is a big responsibility. You must always be aware of your surroundings and follow the rules of the road to stay safe.
