ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Duress

Okay kiddo, have you ever been forced to do something you didn't want to do? Maybe a bully made you give them your favorite toy or a teacher made you apologize for something you didn't do? That's kind of like what duress is.

Duress means someone is being forced to do something because they're afraid of what might happen if they don't. It's like if someone is holding a knife to your throat and telling you to give them money. You might give them the money, even if you didn't want to, because you're scared of what might happen if you don't.

Sometimes, people use duress to get other people to do things for them. If someone is being threatened or hurt, they might do whatever the person who is hurting them wants them to do. For example, a person might be forced to steal something for someone else because they're scared of what might happen if they don't.

It's important to remember that duress isn't right, and it's never okay for someone to force you to do something you don't want to do.
