ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Empathy gap (social psychology)

The empathy gap is a way of explaining why people sometimes have trouble understanding the thoughts, feelings, and decisions of other people. It's especially common when people have very different experiences and backgrounds. Basically, it can be harder to understand someone else if you haven't gone through similar things yourself. For example, if you grew up in a very wealthy home and you've never worried about money, it might be harder for you to understand why someone else might be struggling to make ends meet.
