ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Engineering notation

Engineering notation is a way of writing very big or very small numbers. It makes it easier to understand the size of a number.

In engineering notation, the numbers are written in parts: the first part tells us the size of the number, and the second part shows us the exact number.

The size of the number is written as a power of 10. That means it is written as "10 to the power of something", like 10^3.

The exact number is written after this. It will be between 1 and 1000. Usually it is written with only one number after the decimal point.

For example, if we want to write the number 1750 in engineering notation, it would be written as 1.75 × 10^3. This tells us that it is 1.75 times 10 to the power of 3, or 1750.

Another example is 0.00123. This would be written as 1.23 × 10^-3 in engineering notation. This tells us that it is 1.23 times 10 to the power of -3, or 0.00123.
