ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

English honorific

An honorific is a word that we use to show respect or politeness towards someone. In English, honorifics are often used before someone's name, like "Mr." or "Mrs." or "Ms." This is called a title.

If we don't know someone's name, we might use a general honorific like "sir" or "ma'am" to show respect without using their name.

Honorifics can also be used to show a person's profession or status. For example, we might use "Doctor" or "Professor" before someone's name if they have earned that title through their work or education.

Overall, using an honorific is a way to show respect and politeness towards someone, and to acknowledge their position or status in society.
