ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

English-language spelling reform

Do you know how sometimes words can be really tricky to spell? Like "receipt" or "necessary"? Well, a long time ago, some people thought it would be a good idea to change the way we spell words so that they would be easier to spell.

But changing how we spell words is not an easy thing to do. It's like trying to get everyone to agree on what color the sky is - it can be hard to get people to agree on things. The people who wanted to change spelling had different ideas about how to do it, and not everyone agreed with them.

Some people thought we should spell words like they sound, so that you could just write down what you hear. But sometimes different people pronounce words differently, so this idea didn't work for everyone.

Other people thought we should spell words the way they were originally spelled, back when they came into the English language. But that would mean we'd have to learn a completely new set of spellings for all our words, which would be pretty tough.

In the end, not much changed in English spelling. People still spell words in all different ways, and we still have to memorize tricky spellings for some words. But maybe someday we'll figure out a way to make spelling easier for everyone!
