Okay, kiddo, let me tell you about cancer and how we study it.
Cancer is a very bad illness that happens when some of our cells start to grow and multiply in a way that is not normal. It can happen anywhere in our body, like our lungs, stomach, or skin.
Epidemiology is the study of how diseases spread and how we can prevent them. When we talk about epidemiology of cancer, what we mean is how cancer happens in different groups of people, like boys and girls, people in different countries or races, and people who do different things, like smoke or eat unhealthy food.
Scientists who study epidemiology of cancer look at a lot of information to try and figure out what causes cancer and who is most likely to get it. They look at things like:
- How many people get cancer each year
- What kinds of cancer are most common
- What age people get cancer
- What gender, race, or ethnic group is more likely to get cancer
- What things in the environment (like pollution) might cause cancer
- What things we do (like smoking, drinking alcohol, or not being active) might cause cancer
By studying all this information, scientists can figure out ways to help prevent cancer. They can tell us things like:
- What foods are good for our bodies and help us stay healthy
- That we should wear sunscreen to protect our skin from the sun's harmful rays
- That smoking is a really bad habit that causes many cancers
- That we should try and exercise every day to stay healthy
So just remember, kiddo, scientists who study the epidemiology of cancer are like detectives trying to figure out what causes it and how we can stop it from happening.
