ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Epitrochoid

Hey kiddo! Have you ever played with a toy called a Spirograph? It has gears and wheels that you can use to make pretty designs by tracing around them with a pen or pencil. An epitrochoid is a type of shape that you can make with a Spirograph.

Here's how it works: imagine that the Spirograph has one big wheel and one smaller wheel attached to it. The smaller wheel rolls inside the bigger wheel as they both move around. When you trace around the path of the smaller wheel, you get a shape called a hypotrochoid.

But if you trace around the path of a point on the edge of the smaller wheel as it rolls around inside the bigger wheel, you get something different: an epitrochoid. It's a bit like a flower with curved petals, and it can come in all sorts of different sizes and shapes depending on the ratio of the two wheels.

So that's it! An epitrochoid is just a special type of shape that you can make with a Spirograph. It's kind of like a flower made out of circles and curves. Cool, huh?
