ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ethnic federalism

Ethnic federalism is like a big cake that is cut into pieces. Each piece of the cake is given to a different group of people, and each group gets to decide how they want to decorate their piece of the cake.

In this type of federalism, the country is divided into smaller states or regions based on ethnic or cultural identity. Each state or region is allowed to have its own language, culture, and political system. This means that people from different ethnic backgrounds can live in their own region and govern themselves, while still being part of the larger country.

Ethnic federalism is used in countries where different ethnic groups have had conflicts in the past. By allowing each group to govern themselves, there is less chance of conflict and everyone can live in peace.

Like a cake that is cut into pieces, the idea is that each piece is unique and represents a different group of people with their own traditions and culture. However, just like a cake needs to be carefully cut to ensure everyone gets their fair share, there can be challenges in ensuring that each ethnic group is represented equally and that everyone's needs are met.
