European Convention on Human Rights

The European Convention on Human Rights is a special agreement signed by countries in Europe that aims to make sure everyone in Europe is treated fairly, with respect and kindness. It says that everyone has certain basic rights--like the freedom to speak your mind, and freedom from torture--and that governments must protect those rights. It also says that if someone believes their rights have been violated (for example, if someone is unfairly treated by the government), they can apply to the European Court of Human Rights for help. This means that everyone in Europe has a say in how their rights are treated, and know their governments can't take them away.
