Alright kiddo, have you ever seen a bird's beak? It's a very special thing that helps the bird to eat food. But did you know that long long time ago, the beaks of birds were not always used for eating?
In fact, some birds used to have different body parts for eating, like teeth or claws. But as time went on, these birds had to adapt to their environment and find new ways to get food. So, their old body parts started to change and become the beaks we see today.
This process is called "exaptation." Basically, it means that a body part was originally used for one purpose, but over time it became useful for something entirely different. In the case of the bird's beak, it was exapted from something else and became very handy for eating!
So, exaptation is all about changing and adapting to new situations. Just like how you might switch from USING your crayons to color a picture to USING your markers when you need more color!
