Expected satiety

Okay kiddo, have you ever eaten a big plate of your favorite food? Did you feel really full and satisfied afterwards? That feeling of fullness is called satiety. Scientists can measure how much food makes people feel full by doing a study where they ask people to eat certain amounts of food and then rate how full they feel after. Then they use this information to create something called an "expected satiety" rating for different foods.

So let's say you have two food options: a salad and a cheeseburger. The expected satiety rating for the salad might be higher than the rating for the cheeseburger because the salad has a lot of veggies and fiber, which are things that make you feel full for longer. But the cheeseburger might have a lot of fat and sugar, which can make you feel full initially but then hungry again pretty quickly.

So when you're choosing what to eat, thinking about expected satiety can help you pick something that will make you feel full and satisfied for longer. And that way, you can enjoy your food without feeling hungry again right away!
