ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Exploration of Pluto

Okay kiddo, let me explain the exploration of Pluto in a way that you can understand.

So, Pluto is a really far away planet, much further than our own Moon. Scientists wanted to learn more about Pluto, but it was too far away to just send a person to go there. Instead, they had to come up with a really special plan to explore Pluto.

They decided to build a special spaceship called New Horizons to go to Pluto. It traveled for a really long time, more than 9 years, to get to Pluto. That's longer than you've been alive!

Once the New Horizons got to Pluto, it was able to take pictures and measurements of the planet. It sent all of this information back to Earth so scientists could study it.

We learned a lot of new things about Pluto because of the New Horizons mission. We found out that Pluto is actually much more interesting than we thought. It has mountains and even ice volcanoes!

So, that's how scientists explored Pluto, by sending a spaceship all the way there to take pictures and measurements and send them back to Earth. It was a really amazing and exciting mission!
