ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Extrajudicial prisoners of the United States

Okay kiddo, so you know how when you do something wrong, you might have to go to time-out or get a punishment like not being able to watch your favorite TV show?

Well, sometimes adults do things that are really, really bad, like hurting other people or trying to take over a whole country. When they do something like that, they might be arrested by the police or the army and put in jail.

But sometimes, instead of being put in a regular jail where they can see a judge and have a fair trial, these really bad people are taken to secret prisons. These secret prisons are called "extrajudicial" because they are not part of the regular legal system or the rules that everyone else has to follow.

And in these secret prisons, the bad people might be treated really badly. They might be kept in small rooms all alone, or they might be hurt or even tortured. And the worst part is that they might never get to see a judge or have a fair trial to prove whether they did something wrong or not.

Now, here's the really important part, kiddo: this is not how things are supposed to work. We believe in justice and fairness in the United States, and everyone, even the really bad people, should get a fair trial to prove whether they did something wrong or not. Keeping people in secret prisons and treating them unfairly is not okay, no matter what they might have done.
