ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Father absence

When a kid grows up without their dad around, we call it "father absence." It means that the kid's dad isn't living with them or spending as much time with them as they might like.

Sometimes fathers are absent because of things like work or military service that take them away from home for long periods of time. But other times, fathers might be absent because of things like divorce or separation, where one parent moves out of the home and isn't around as much anymore.

Father absence can be hard for kids because they might miss out on things like playing catch, going to the park, or just hanging out with their dad. It can make them feel sad or lonely, like something important is missing from their life.

But it's important to remember that not all families have a dad living with them, and that's okay too. There are lots of people in our lives who can love us and be there for us, like moms, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or even family friends. We can still have happy and loving families even if our dad isn't around.
