ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fetal pig

A fetal pig is a baby pig that is still inside its mother's belly. When scientists study the pig's body for research or learning purposes, they will remove it from the mother pig's belly so they can examine it more closely. This is sometimes called dissection.

During dissection, scientists will carefully cut open the pig's body and look at all of its organs and bones. This helps them learn about how pigs and other animals work. For example, they can study how the heart pumps blood or how the lungs help the pig breathe.

Now, remember how we talked about how the pig is still inside its mother's belly? Well, that means there are some parts of the body that scientists won't be able to see during the dissection. But don't worry! They can still learn a lot from what they can see.

It's important to note that fetal pigs are usually used for educational purposes and are not harmed or killed just for this process. Often, they are the by-products of the meat industry and would have been discarded otherwise.
