ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Field capacity

Field capacity is like a sponge in the ground. When it rains or when we water plants, the soil soaks up the water like a sponge. Field capacity is the maximum amount of water that the soil can hold after it has soaked up all the water it can. Imagine squeezing a sponge until it’s as full of water as it can be. That’s what the soil is like when it’s at field capacity. The soil can be too dry or too wet, so it's important to know when it's at field capacity for growing healthy plants.
