Fifth column

A fifth column is a group of people who secretly work to help an enemy of their own country. They work in secret, often by trying to influence people in powerful positions, to get information, spread false stories, or create protests and unrest in their own country in order to help the enemy. They sometimes even try to sabotage their own country's efforts to defend itself.
