ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Five-foot way

Five-foot way is like a special sidewalk that is covered in some countries. It is usually located in front of shops or houses and is about five feet wide, which is as wide as four big pizza boxes put together.

The reason this special sidewalk is covered is because it protects people from rain or sun so they can walk comfortably, even during bad weather. You can imagine it like a little roof on the side of a building.

In addition to keeping people dry and cool, the five-foot way also helps with safety. When people walk on the five-foot way, they are away from the street where cars drive, making it less likely for them to get hit by a car.

So when you're walking around in countries like Southeast Asia, you might see these special covered sidewalks, and that's the five-foot way!
