ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Flagship species

Flagship species are like the superhero animals that are chosen to represent a larger group of animals or a certain area. It's like when you pick a team captain in a game, and that person represents the whole team.

For example, let's say we want to protect a forest that is home to many different animals, but it would be difficult to focus on all of them at the same time. Instead, we choose a special animal that is well-liked and popular, like a panda or a tiger, to be the "flagship species" for the forest.

By using the panda or the tiger as a symbol for the conservation of the forest, we are able to attract a lot of attention and support from people who want to help protect these animals. This helps us to raise awareness and funds to protect the whole forest and all the animals that call it home.

So, flagship species are like the ambassadors or representatives of a larger group of animals or area, chosen because they are charismatic and easily recognisable to people from all over the world.
