ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Flexible substrate

Okay kiddo, do you ever play with stickers and put them on different things like your backpack or your water bottle? Well, imagine that the stickers were really thin and stretchy like a piece of elastic. This stretchy material is called a flexible substrate.

Flexible substrates are really thin materials that can bend and stretch without breaking. They are used in lots of things that need to be flexible like electronic devices, like the screens on your phone or the sensors in your toys. This is because the circuits and components in these devices need to be able to bend as they are used, just like a piece of paper can bend.

Just think of the flexible substrate like the foundation of a building. It needs to be strong enough to support everything that goes on top of it, but also flexible enough to move with changes in temperature or pressure. And just like a building, if the flexible substrate is not strong enough, everything on top of it might break or fall apart.

So, by using flexible substrates, we can make more durable and reliable devices that can bend and flex as needed. It's pretty cool, right?
