ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Flower Structure

Okay kiddo, do you know what a flower is? It's a colorful and pretty plant that smells really good. But did you know that flowers have different parts just like people have different body parts? Let me explain.

First, we have the part of the flower that sticks out and is usually the most colorful. This is called the petal. The petal is like the dress or shirt a person wears to look beautiful.

Next, we have the part of the flower that is usually smaller and more plain in color. This is called the sepal. The sepal is like the jacket a person wears to keep warm.

Now, let's talk about the more important parts of the flower. These are the parts that are responsible for helping the flower make seeds so that new flowers can grow.

There's the stigma, which is like a sticky pad on top of a long stick called the style. That stick connects the stigma to the ovary, which is like a little house where the seeds grow.

Inside the ovary, there are eggs that can turn into seeds if they get fertilized. This is where the pollen comes in. Pollen is like the flower's sperm - it joins up with the eggs to make a new baby flower.

Finally, we have the stem, which is like the flower's spine. It holds up all the different parts of the flower and helps it stand up straight.

So that's the flower structure! All these parts work together to help make more flowers so we can enjoy their beauty and smell all year long!
